SANTO ANTONIO CELEBRATIONS

The Soul of Lisbon  Santo Antonio Celebrations

June 11-17, 2022

“Pereira maintains he met him one summer’s day. A fine fresh sunny summer’s day and Lisbon was sparkling”                                     from Pereira Mantains, Antonio Tabucchi

TPW goes back to Lisbon.

Santo Antonio Festival, Lisbon is one of Portugal’s most famous annual street parties taking place each year in early June and attracting thousands of visitors to the capital.

Lisbon’s Santo Antonio Festival is the most important annual festival in Lisbon and celebrates the life of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of Lisbon, marriages and lost things. Historically, the event was known as “Festas dos Santos Populares,” meaning “Feasts of the Popular Saints,” but over time it has become more about street parties and a celebration of the city rather than religion.

Lisbon is a multi-faced place.
You can enjoy the historical part of town, go for long walks and stop at the miradoures for breath taking views of the city and the river that  soon will meet the ocean, take a ride on the yellow trams that are the symbolic icon of the city, and stop for lunch in one of the many small restaurants and eat fresh fish.
You can.
But this was the scenario offered to tourists visiting Lisbon up to a few years ago.
Recently  there has been a soft revolution, and many areas that were abandoned are having a second life! The rhythm of the city is still very relaxed, but there is a new vibe, you can feel it behind the surface.
You will still find the old-fashioned restaurants with waiters in white shirt and black tie, and close nearby the new music bars – not copies of places you could find around Europe – but with a true Portuguese elegance and stigma.
Fado mixes with jazz and hip music from Angola and Cabo Verde: it is a continuous trip back and forth between past/present/future.
To photograph all this, the venues, day and night life of the city, and capture this new  rhythm,  Pauliana Valente Pimentel will be the perfect teacher.
Born in Lisbon, and still using it as home when not traveling to photograph around the world, she will take you with her and introduce you to her friends, show you corners of Lisbon you would not find on your own, where the public space is intensely lived and help you in organizing you project on the city.
You will explore the city in its varied aspects, the inhabitants, the dynamics of street, the local trade, day and night.
Her energy is contagious, she know everything and everybody in Lisbon, and will make this workshop a memorable one.
This workshop is perfect for those who want to improve their skills in street-photography, pushing their comfort zone to the limit and at the same time have the chance to live in deep the life of one of Europe’s most vibrant capitals.
Over the week, there will be daily meetings and critiques.
Pauliana will help us in finding accommodation, possibly all in the same area.
Meals are independent but, as usual, we always end up having dinner together.
