Summer Workshop  •   August 12-18, 2023

Lorenzo Castore will join us for the first time at Villa Lina.

The Emotional Portrait

This workshop has a precise idea and wants to focus on the practice of portraiture and the attitude of being involved in the experience of taking photographs. Given the exceptional nature of the place that hosts us and my desire to try a more specific approach to the work of a weekly workshop, for the first time I have decided to propose that we all work on a defined mode of expression and to do so in an emotional and intuitive manner, seeking a visceral involvement with what we want to express. We will also try to develop this expression through an active attitude, giving directions and taking responsibility. We will not work on the formal aspect as an end in itself but we will try to recognise the initial emotional intention together with our being in that moment and in that place in relation to our state of mind and that of those who are there with us, to the light and space present here and now. All of this must stimulate our ability to transform energy into images through the 1-to-1 relationship with the portrayed subject. The work we will do will be aimed at making us pursue our desire to express something while also giving space to the surprise and unexpected revelations brought about by the encounter.

Lorenzo Castore was born in Florence, Italy in 1973.

His work is marked out by long term projects mainly focusing on his personal experience, everyday life, memory and the relation between minor individual stories, History and the present time.

In 1982 he moved to Rome with his mother and in 1992 he relocated to New York City where he began photographing on the street.

After a formative trip to India in 1997, he got a degree in Law and then in 1999 traveled to photograph war in Albania and Kosovo. After this experience he decided to stop working on news and to deepen his personal research. In the same year he visited Gliwice, Poland: for a long time first Silesia and then Cracow became key locations for his photographic investigation.

In 2000-01 he returned to New York and India for extensive traveling and photo work.

In 2001 he moved to Milan and joined Grazia Neri Agency. In 2001-02 he realized the series Paradiso.

In 2013-15 he worked on the series Sogno #5 with bipolar patients performing in the former Mental Institution Leonardo Bianchi, Naples.

Since 2008 he’s working at the series Ultimo Domicilio to which from time to time he adds new chapters: the project is constantly ongoing.

In 2013 he shot his second short film, Casarola about the Bertolucci’s family historic home.

From 2011 until 2019 he is working at Glitter Blues, a story on a queer community in Catania.

In 2018 he was invited by the Museum of Gliwice for a long artistic residency from which came out Land. In the same year he began collaborating with Michael Ackerman at Photo Divine Studio, a new shared project taking place in India: three trips have been made to date, with one more to go to complete the work.

In 2019, 1994-2001 | A beginning is released, the first volume of a lifelong publishing project published by L’Artiere: the publication of a large book consisting of chapters in progressive chronological order will continue indefinitely. The second volume, 2001-2007 | Lack & Longing, was published in 2022.

In 2020-21 he realized his third short film W.

In 2021-22 he photographed extensively the director Bernardo Bertolucci and the poet Patrizia Cavalli homes continuing the ongoing project Ultimo Domicilio.
