A WINTER’S TALE
Venice, in the last days of winter, lives in a suspended time. Carnival is over and less people, mainly residents, walk the silent streets (or shall we call them calli?) It still gets dark rather early, and sometimes the fog embraces people and buildings. With this in mind, we will run a new workshop there. Throughout the years, TPW has returned to Venice many times.
This time Giacomo Brunelli will explore the city with his personal style, leading the students to discover hidden aspects, and interpreter these with your own vision.
In January 2020, I decided to embark on a new project on the city of Venice as I have always been fascinated by its uniqueness, its fragility and vulnerability. In 2021, I managed to spend a few months there to complete the project, photographing this city built on more than 100 islands, no streets or cars just bridges, canals and water. I hope with this project to represent its timeless beauty and elegance.
In my projects, I try to give new life to what we have daily in front of our eyes. When I photographed London, the city where I live, I tried to tell a story of a timeless and dreamlike city through the details of everyday life and I did the same “The Animals” and now with “New York”. I like to tell the mysteries surrounding everyday things.
I shoot with a Miranda from the 60s (once it belonged to my father) and I have always used black and white as a form of expression.
I am a fan of silver gelatin printing and find the black and white elegant, direct and in line with the type of emotions I want to convey.
The workshop aims to develop the photographic vision of each student, guiding them into the practice of fine art and documentary photography.
During this workshop, we will focus on developing a photographic project, from the start to finish, from the idea through the editing publication, exploring every personal approach.

PRACTICAL INFO We will be located in Cannaregio or Castello. Will find our own center there, for meetings, and students can find accommodation in the area. Venice in March has no tourists, and hotels and B&B rates are very convenient. We will use morning for meetings, classes and critique, and the afternoon/night for shooting and working on our projects. We will have dinner together, in order to share the experiences of the day.
BIOGRAPHY
Giacomo Brunelli (b. Perugia, Italy, 1977) graduated with a degree in International Communications in 2002. His series have been exhibited at the Barbican Centre (Uk),
The Photographers’Gallery (Uk), The New Art Gallery Walsall (Uk) , Triennial of Photography Hamburg (Germany), Nordic Light Festival (Norway), Format Festival, Derby (Uk), BlueSky Gallery, Portland (Usa) and Galleria Belvedere Milan (Italy).
The work has won the Sony World Photography Award, the Gran Prix Lodz, Poland and the Magenta Foundation “Flash Forward 2009”. It has also been featured widely in the art and photography press including BBC (Uk), The Guardian (Uk), Harper’s Magazine (Usa), Eyemazing (Holland), European Photography (Germany), B&W Magazine (Usa), Creative Review (Uk), Foto&Video (Russia). His work is in the collection of Peter Fetterman Gallery (Usa), Museum of Fine Arts Houston (Usa), The New Art Gallery Walsall, Uk Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (Japan) and Portland Art Museum (Usa).
