“My journey behind the lens began in Rome more than twenty years ago, but my connection to the Eternal City goes far deeper than my career. Rome is the city that saw the birth of my two children and remains the heart of my family’s story. Beyond its welcoming spirit and the golden sun, I am endlessly inspired by its architectural soul. There is a unique magic in the way the light hits the world’s most breathtaking churches and palaces here.

To photograph Rome is to document a personal love affair with the most stunning architecture in the world.

I shoot film with a Miranda from the 60s (once it belonged to my father) and I have always used black and white as a form of expression.

I am a fan of silver gelatin printing and find the black and white elegant, direct and in line with the type of emotions I want to convey.

The workshop aims to develop the photographic vision of each student, guiding them into the practice of fine art and documentary photography. 

During this workshop, we will focus on developing a photographic project, from the start to finish, from the idea through the editing publication, exploring every personal approach.”

After two successful workshops in Venice with Giacomo Brunelli, our journey leads us now to Rome.

A new city, a new challenge. Giacomo is currently developing a personal project in the Eternal City, spending time walking, observing, and photographing it — always in his own distinctive way. As in his books on New York, London, and Venice, he brings an intimate vision of the city, avoiding clichés or bending them to his advantage through his unmistakable, clean black-and-white style.

During the workshop, we will move beyond the obvious and discover Rome’s quieter, hidden corners, far from the well-trodden tourist routes. Like all great cities, Rome reveals itself on many levels: from the monumental grandeur scattered across its streets to the humble neighbourhoods and rioni where the true soul of the city quietly lives.

After a day or two, amazement becomes a constant companion. Every turn reveals something new — a church, a fountain, a crowded street, a local market, fragments of everyday life. Slowly, almost without noticing, you find yourself completely immersed in beauty — La Grande Bellezza.

Rome is romantic and chaotic, loud yet intimate, rich in contrasts and emotions. There are countless words to describe it, and more than one visit is needed to begin to understand its true essence. The best approach is to let go: wander along grand boulevards or narrow alleyways, eat in a simple trattoria or a refined restaurant, enjoy street food, and wait for the sun to set from one of the city’s hills.

Whether this is your first time in Rome or you have visited before, this will be a special week — out of season, still warm, with softer light and fewer tourists — a perfect moment to truly see the city.

PRACTICAL INFO We will be located in the centre of Rome. Still scouting for the best area. Will find our own centre there, for meetings, and students can find accommodation in the area. Rome at the end of September has less tourists, and hotels and B&B rates are very convenient.  We will use morning for meetings, classes and critique, and the afternoon/night for shooting and working on our projects.  We will have dinner together, in order to share the experiences of the day.
