Tuscia, Italy • July 14-20, 2019

Hang, study and jam with one of the hottest players around.

In this 5-day residential workshop with Slide Guitar supremo Ariel Posen, you’ll spend every day learning a whole lot about blues improvising, rhythm playing and slide guitar, enjoying the delicious food and taking in the magical setting and culture of Tuscia.

Topics covered in the workshop will include:

  • 12-Bar Blues Rhythm Feels
  • Improvising over the 12-Bar Blues form
  • Phrasing and ‘Call & Response’
  • Slide guitar basics, improvising and the use of open tunings
  • Target Notes and Making The Changes
  • Much more…

To get a taste of Ariel’s teaching style, check out the lessons on Justin’s website – just filmed with him– having spent time with him and witnessed both his playing and teaching chops up close, I have 100% confidence that it will be an AMAZING week of lessons and a great hang – I‘m just sad that I can’t make it along myself!

You’ll arrive at our beautiful Villa on Sunday evening for introduction drinks and dinner.

You can expect 3-4 hours of classes a day (Monday to Friday) and with class sizes limited to 12 spaces, you’ll get all of the help you need. This small class format means the lessons can easily be tweaked and adapted to fit the goals, requirements and playing experience of the group members.

You should expect to spend at least a couple of hours each day practicing on your own or jamming with other class members to explore and internalize the day’s lesson content (That is, if you don’t spend all of your downtime swimming in one of the three pools!) and you’ll be invited to jam with your fellow students at the Friday night ‘concert’.

You’ll then depart on Saturday morning after a farewell breakfast!

Our venue will be Villa Lina, a Landmark Relais, with 3 mansions each, all immersed in 80 acres of organic estate in the heart of Etruscan Tuscia with its extraordinary Archaeological and Nature sites, Roman therms & hot sulfur springs close by .

A place of magical energy it is also one of the “Great Italian Gardens,” its eighteenth century botanical garden has many ancient rare species, in the midst of beautiful fountains.

There is an Olympic pool from 1929 .

Managed by writer and film maker Paola Igliori (see Wikipedia), it has inspired generations of artists from Jean Michel Basquiat in the 80′.. to this decade Nick Cave & Bella Freud.

Food is cooked by  the in-house cook, specialized in local dishes.

All together, the perfect venue for our retreat, and if you feel the need of some true town life, Ronciglione is only 5 minutes walk away, … shops, cafes, groceries, banks, pharmacy…Gelato!!!!
Rooms at Villa Lina are one different from the other, finishing is very original, goes from some antique pieces, to Asian furniture, to designer pieces…

Singer/songwriter. Internationally-renowned guitarist. Producer. Solo artist. A lifelong musician, there are few roles Ariel Posen hasn’t played.

Although born in Winnipeg, Posen spent much of his childhood on the road, traveling from show to show with his musician parents. He began playing guitar at 9 years old, kicking off a career that eventually found him traveling the globe for his own gigs, including shows as a member of the Juno Award winning, roots-rock band The Bros. Landreth. Several years later, Posen began working on an album of his own, tracking his new songs in the same studio in which his parents once recorded their albums.

How Long marks Posen’s long-awaited solo debut, showcasing not only his chops as an instrumentalist, but his talents as a diverse songwriter, too. The record casts a wide net, moving from rootsy blues to R&B to melodic rock & roll. A co-writer and producer for artists of all genres, Posen shows the full range of his talents on these 10 tracks, nodding to his influences — including The Beatles, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer and more — along the way. How Long is not a guitar record, although there’s certainly plenty of guitar to be heard here. Instead, it’s a song record, filled with hooks, autobiographical lyrics, and Posen’s compelling voice.

“The guitar is the tool to get the music out,” he says. “Always serve the song first. Otherwise, you’re just playing an instrument.”
