Venice: Day & Night • Christopher Morris

The idea of photographing Venice could seem a bit cliché to some. Surely one of the most photographed cities in the world has been sufficiently covered by now in all its seasons, shades and nuances.
But as usual we like challenges and we are offering this workshop to discover an unseen dimension of Venice.
First of all, we are purposely avoiding the Carnival season, which, in our opinion, is too crowded.
We are instead choosing a particular time of the year, where the light of winter is still present, but is yielding to the new light of spring.
The title of the workshop suggest a particular vision: you will be shooting a lot during the day, but it is at night time that the city enter another dimension, with strong emotions: light, people, places…everything assumes a different dimension.
We will experience firsthand this contrast, and the experience of getting lost in the labyrinth of street and walkways, creating our own routes, from one place to another, and getting lost only to reconnect with our path and reaching our final destination.
Day/night, and also, water/land …walking through small alleys and wide open piazzas, and all the while, having the water as a point of reference…or the other way around, navigate on the channels, and look at the land, in a continuous game of light and reflections
Students will learn how to move beyond stereotypes and reach the “Venetian state of mind” with their eyes, emotions, and sensations.
There will be daily critiques, groups and individual, too verify the status of your work.
For this special workshop, we decided to work with a special photographer, Christopher Morris
Christopher will teach you how to develop a personal style. Photographing Venice, it is very easy to fall in the clichés…the challenge will be to produce images not only about he place and the people you will meet, but also about yourself.
In 25 years of photography, Christopher has gone through different genders of photography, from war-photography, to the White House photography, to portraiture and recently to fashion and personal research – always keeping a strong personal style.
During the workshop Christopher will also talk about careers and the use of a powerful post-production
BIOGRAPHY
Christopher Morris (born California 1958) is an American photojournalist, best known for his war photographs.
Most of Morris’ work has concentrated on war. Some of the wars he photographed were the US invasion of Iraq, the drug war in Colombia, the Persian Gulf War, the wars in Afghanistan, Somalia, Yugoslavia, and Chechnya − more than 18 foreign conflicts. He documented the presidency of George W. Bush for Time, and is a founding member of the VII Photo Agency.
In recent years, Morris has worked on his monograph, My America that was published in 2006. My America was produced while on assignment for TIME magazine covering U.S. President George W. Bush. Morris describes My America as his personal journey into a Republican America. Through portraits and landscapes, Morris hopes that the viewer “sees what he saw and feels what he felt – a nation that has wrapped its eyes so tightly in red, white, and blue that it has gone blind.”
Morris has received a multitude of awards for his work, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal award, The Olivier Rebbot award and the Feature Photography award from the Overseas Press Club; the Magazine Photographer of the Year award from the University of Missouri School of Journalism; Two Infinity Photojournalist awards from the International Center of Photography, New York; the Visa d’Or award; and numerous World Press Photo Awards.

L’idea di un workshop a Venezia può sembrare in un primo momento scontata. Sicuramente è la città più fotografata del mondo, sembra che tutto sia gia stato fotografato da tutti, in tutti i modi e tutte le stagioni…
Ma come sempre amiamo le sfide, e proponiamo questo workshop per cercare un nuovo approccio per fotografare Venezia.
Innanzitutto, abbiamo volutamente evitato il periodo del Carnevale, troppo chiassoso, e scelto un momento dell’anno particolare, dove la luce dell’inverno è ancora presente, ma lascia il posto a quella della primavera.
Il titolo stesso del workshop suggerisce una visione particolare, doppia: naturalmente si fotograferà molto di giorno…ma è di notte che la città si trasforma e ci regala forti emozioni, non solo per le luci, ma per la gente e i ritmi della notte.
Venezia offre una grande diversità tra le cose viste di giorno e di notte: piazza San Marco, l’emblema della città, cambia completamente quando scende la sera e lentamente si svuota.
Potremo verificare il contrasto tra la realtà diurna e quella notturna, smarrirci nei labirinti di terra della città, creare percorsi nostri per attraversare la città, e lungo la strada perderci per poi recuperare la meta prefissa.
Come scrivono Guido Fuga e Lele Vianello nell’introduzione all’eccellente guida “Corto Sconto” che raccomandiamo di legger prima di questo workshop, “..si potrà fare, insomma, come l’acqua, che visita ogni vicolo segreto e ne esce poi..”
Altro aspetto duplice di Venezia, oltre a giorno/notte, è quello di acqua/terra: camminare avendo sempre l’acqua come punto di riferimento, navigare lungo i canali e osservare la terra ferma, in un gioco continuo di rimandi e specchi.
Imparerete presto ad abbandonare gli stereotipi, a interpretare il sogno veneziano con i vostri occhi, le vostre emozioni e sensazioni.
Ogni giorno ci saranno critiche di gruppo e individuali, per verificare verso quale direzione indirizzare il proprio lavoro: gente, luoghi, sensazioni…
Per questo workshop particolare, abbiamo scelto di lavorare con un fotografo speciale, Christopher Morris…
Christopher vi insegnerà a sviluppare uno stile particolare. Con Venezia, è facile cadere nel banale…la sfida sarà quella di produrre immagini che parlino di voi stessi e al momento stesso del luogo in cui siete e le persone che incontrate. Chris è riuscito, negli ultimi 25 anni di carriera, a passare attraverso diversi aspetti della fotografia – guerra, ritratto, moda, ricerca personale – mantenendo intatta la sua coerenza visiva. Durante il workshop si tratteranno anche temi legati alla post-produzione e future carriere nel mondo della fotografia
BIOGRAFIA
Christopher Morris, (California, 1958) è un fotogiornalista americano, conosciuto per le due fotografie di conflitti. La maggior parte del lavoro di Morris è concentrata sulle guerre: l’invasione USA di Iraq, la guerra sulla droga in Colombia, la guerra del Golfo, Afghanistan, Somalia Yugoslavia, Cecenia…
Ha fotografato il presidente Gorge W.Bush per Time, e ed è uno dei membri fondatori dell’agenzia VII.
Recentemente lavora su progetti personali con i grandi stilisti di moda.
Ha pubblicato la monografia My America, pubblicata nel 2006, prodotto mentre era on assignment per TIME magazine.
