“Non so da dove incominciare. Non credo che la fotografia si possa insegnare. Non voglio proporre un metodo o uno stile. La cosa che per me conta di piu’ é l’apertura nei confronti di quello che si é e di quello che si ha da dire. Quindi non ho un vero e proprio programma da proporre, se non cercare di togliere comodi punti di riferimento, ed aiutare a fare lo sforzo di confrontarsi con se stessi in modo immediato, e fotografare di conseguenza, facendo in modo che la fotografia non sia un espediente tecnico-stilistico dietro cui nascondersi, ma un mezzo semplice e diretto per essere in comunione con ciò che amiamo. Una strada, un muro, una storia, una persona, noi stessi, tutte queste cose insieme, quello che preferite. Non ho mai trovato il minimo interesse nelle catalogazioni: per me riferirsi alla fotografia giornalistica, sociale, personale, di paesaggio, ritrattistica etc non significa assolutamente niente. L’unica cosa che conta é la cura che si mette in quello che si fa; le belle fotografie sono tali in quanto vere, autentiche, e lo diventano, di più o di meno, nella misura in cui si tende alla verità che abbiamo dentro, ognuno assecondando la propria differente natura, che ha tante sfumature. Dimenticare se stessi, mettersi a disagio, non aver paura, godere di tutte queste cose. Insomma, tutte le cose che mi ripeto ogni mattina quando mi guardo allo specchio.”

PROGRAMMA

l gruppo verrà diviso in due e le mattine del sabato e della domenica si analizzeranno molto approfonditamente i lavori (portfoli, dummies) fino alla prime ore del pomeriggio. Questo lavoro implica la partecipazione attiva di tutti – nella seconda parte della giornata racconterò il mio percorso mostrando alcuni lavori cercando di sviluppare dei dialoghi aperti prendendo spunto da ciò che verrà raccontato e proiettato – NB: i portfoli o dummies dei partecipanti dovranno essere composti con cura facendo in modo che di capiscano l’intenzioni e il mondo del loro autore. Non devono essere foto belle o giuste ma rappresentative della personalità del partecipante.

BIOGRAFIA

Lorenzo Castore nasce a Firenze nel 1973.

Il suo lavoro – radicalmente intrecciato all’esperienza personale – è caratterizzato da progetti di lungo termine che hanno come tema principale il quotidiano, la memoria e la relazione tra piccole storie individuali, il presente e la Storia.

Il suo lavoro è stato esposto in numerose mostre personali e collettive, in Italia e all’estero.

Tiene regolarmente workshops in tutto il mondo dal 2003.

Ha pubblicato sei libri monografici: Nero (2004), Paradiso (2005), Ultimo Domicilio (2015), Ewa & Piotr – Si vis pacem, para bellum (2018), Land (2019), 1994-2001 | A beginning (2019).

Ha realizzato due film brevi: No peace without war, diretto con Adam Grossman Cohen (2012) e Casarola (2015).

Eyes Wide Open

“I don’t know where to begin from. I don’t think photography
is something you can teach. I don’t want to impose a method, nor a style. The most important thing is to be open about who you are and what you want to say. I will not have a real schedule to offer you. My efforts will be to deconstruct the used and abused points of reference in photography and help you to confront with yourself in a immediate way. Photographing will become a simple and direct way to be closer to who and what you love, rather than a technical excuse to hide behind. A street, a wall, a story, a person, ourselves, all those things together, whatever you like. I am against dividing photography into categories: for me documentary photography, social photography, personal photography, landscape, portraiture, etc do not mean a thing. What is important is the attention you pay to what you do. Good photographs, are such because they are true, genuine. They become so when you try to reach the truth that is inside you and follow your personal vision. Forget yourself, put yourself in a uncomfortable situation, don’t be afraid, enjoy all these things. Well, these are the things I keep repeating to myself every morning in front of the mirror .”

PROGRAMME

We will split the group in two and in the mornings we will deeply analyse participants’ work. This will be done as a group action. In the afternoons, I will talk about my personal path in photography, showing some of my work. IMPORTANT: Portfolio or dummies will have to be shown as a project, not just “nice” picture. We want to discover more about the author’s personality.

BIOGRAPHY

1973.
Lorenzo Castore was born in Florence on June 22nd.
1981.
Moves to Rome with his mother.
1992.
Lives in New York where works at Bob Seligman’s TV production office. Begins to photograph in the streets.
1993.
Returns to Rome where studies Law and in the meantime photographs Termini Railway Station and Casilino 700 gipsy camp.
1997.
Travels in India with his friends Giorgio Mortari and Saverio Costanzo: this trip marks an important step. Goes by chance to see Exils, Josef Koudelka exhibition. This show causes a deep and strong impression on him: it changes his perspective on photography and much more, it is a real starting point. Studies photographic and dark-room technique privately.
1998.
Wins the Dintorni dello Sguardo Award and realizes a commission for it photographing the west coast of Genova.
1999.
Immediately after his degree in Law goes to Albania and Kosovo where photographs elderly Serbians imprisoned in an orthodox monastery under siege. Comes back with a frustrating feeling of disillusion regarding the News and photojournalism. Decides of not going anymore where things are happening – at least not before understanding more about himself and his own inner pushes – but where things happened. First trip to Silesia, Poland. His base is Gliwice, the town where Hitler attacked the Radio Station provoking the beginning of World War II.
2000.
Back to Poland where photographs especially in the coal-mines and to India where photographs the routes to Gange’s and its tributaries sources.
2001.
Again India for the Maha Kumbh Mela, then Poland and New York where photographs Ground Zero and the 9/11 impact. Joins Grazia Neri Agency. Starts to document the construction of many buildings for Gregotti Associati International. Meets Michael Ackerman that becomes one of his closest friend and partner of many adventures.
2001-02.
Realizes the color series Paradiso in Havana, Cuba and in Mexico City, Mexico. Meets film-maker Adam Cohen. Starts to document the work of the sculptor Giuseppe Spagnulo.
2003-04.
Meets Christian Caujolle and joins Agence/Galerie VU’: in Paris meets Anders Petersen, a mentor and a important source of inspiration. Works on Nero in South-western Sardinia. Won the Mario Giacomelli Award. Starts giving workshops regularly, activity that continues regularly till today. His first book Nero is published by Federico Motta Editore.
2005.
Works at Present Tense in Italy, France, Spain, Poland and Germany. Won the Leica European Publishers’ Award. The book Paradiso is published by six European publishers.
2006.
Moves to Krakow. Travels and works around Europe. Starts to edit years of his diary work Present Tense: the process is still on today.
2007-08.
He’s in Hungary, Italy, Germany and Greece. Starts to photograph middle aged brother and sister Ewa and Piotr Sosnowski and works on Ultimo Domicilio, a project in chapters about interiors of abandon houses.
2009.
Shoots and directs with Adam Cohen his first short film No Peace Without War.
2010-13.
Continues to work with Ewa and Piotr, at Ultimo Domicilio and Present Tense. He’s one of the ten Italian photographers selected to realise a personal work in occasion of Confindustria century anniversary: he photographs some of the most important Italian industrialists in their home’s living rooms.
2012.
No Peace Without War wins the Golden Frog as Best Short Documentary at Camerimage International Film Festival, Poland.
2011-13.
Documents the demolition of the former Fair area and then the construction of buildings by Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind in Milan.
2013.
Works on Sogno #5, a photo-theatre-sound project realized with bipolar patients in the former Mental Institution Leonardo Bianchi in Naples.
2014.
Realizes his second short film Casarola, a childhood memories dreamlike fairytale taking place in the Bertolucci’s family house in the mountains close to Parma: the pictures of this house constitute Ultimo Domicilio sixth chapter.
2015.
Photographs his grandmother’s house just after her death: this is the seventh and last chapter of Ultimo Domicilio. Works at the development of Luz Network. After many years of preparation starts to work with perseverance on a transvestite community in Catania, Sicily: he goes there till 2018 four times per year for long stays. The book Ultimo Domicilio is published by L’Artiere.
2016.
Continues to work in Catania. Begins to work with Eloi Gimeno on the book concept and on the editing of more than 20 years of black and white photography. Collaborates with the choreographer and director Enzo Cosimi at two new pieces, Estasi and Corpus Hominis.
2017.
Works in Catania with growing intensity and commitment. Realizes a series in memory of his dear friend and great sculptor Giuseppe Spagnulo.
2018.
Finishes his photographic work in Catania that will be titled And you shine instead: from now on the editing work starts. He’s included in the historical group exhibitions 100 years of Leica and Eyes Wild Open. Back to India after 17 years and there works with Michael Ackerman at a common project still in progress. He’s invited by the Museum of Gliwice for an artistic residency about Silesia. The book Ewa & Piotr – Si vis pacem, para bellum is published by Editions Noir sur Blanc.
