DAVIDE BRAMANTETHE ART PHOTOGRAPHER: FROM VISION TO GALLERY
Sicily Workshop 2016 • Siracusa • April 30 – May 6, 2017
Early this Spring we launched a new workshop in Sicily, with Davide Bramante as a teacher.
It has been a great success: a group of dedicated students, coming from places as different as Peru, USA and Australia, joined to follow Davide’s vision on photography and art, a journey going from history of art and photography to the shooting in Siracusa and the area nearby.
The participants produced amazing work and, more important, they are now aware of the world of art photography and how to continue their path through it.
So many new aspect to discover, artisst to follow, idea for different projects.
We all loved the workshop so much, that we are planning to repeat it right away, this time in November, where the city is less crowded and there will be more time to concentrate on our art and photography.
So, consider a week break this autumn, and join us in Siracusa!
Davide Bramante is outstanding in working with his students at TPW. During the workshop he was able to take my photography and visually understand my level of knowledge, skill, and passion, and move my work to the next level. Davide’s kindness and sensitivity gave me a new way to see my work under a totally different light. He is gifted in working with each student to bring out their best!

Davide provided some very helpful suggestions which I will follow through. As always, it was lovely to spend time with you and the other workshop participants. Also a big thank you to Cinzia who was lovely as well as very helpful.
April Montfort, Australia
The workshop was excellent and am so glad to have had the opportunity and honour to meet Davide Bramante and get such worthwhile feedback from him.
Jacqueline Crousillat, Peru-Usa
When choosing a new workshop to include in our list, we carefully listen to your suggestions.
We have been asked many times for a workshop on art-photography, not only from a technical point of view but also the aesthetic and the “commercial” side of it. How the art-photography world is organized, the different directions that art photographers take, from exhibitions in galleries and museums to the collectors’ world.
It is not an easy approach, as each artist follows a different path and uses the camera in a different way, also depending on how he/she wants to promote his work: still there are some common elements – almost rules – that you should know and follow.
Photography is most of the time considered a way to reproduce real life, to document the world around us. Hence the tendency to consider photography as a duplicate of reality.
Many artists use photography more freely, as the main medium to work on their art.
We have two different worlds: what do we call Art- Photography and what Storytelling? Where is the difference? Where ends one and begins the other? Can they coexist in the same photograph?
We have planned a workshop with Davide Bramante – artist who has been using photography from the very beginning of his career – in order to explore this world.
Davide is from Siracusa and has worked and exhibited all over the world, from New York to China.
He will be our guide in this workshop, in which the main goal is to use our cameras to create art-work in this corner of Sicily.
Each participant will contribute with his/her own projects, expressing their artistic vision through the camera.
During the week, we will examine the work of masters of art-photography, we will try to define the role of the artist on today’s art market, analyse the art system and collections, the way the photographic art market has changed in the last twenty years. We will also find out which are the institutions (galleries, museums, art-magazines) and festival to follow and why (Paris photo, Photo London, Photo Fever Paris/Bruxelles, MIA Milano/Bologna/Singapore) and which website is best to check constantly, how to understand and rate work of art prices.
In Davide’s own words
I would like to explore with you the province of Siracusa (Avola, Noto, Palazzolo) and also get permission to get access to the Petrochemical Pole of Siracusa, one of the most important in the world…a great place to create new stories…
Let’s not forget that, during these days (May 15th-21st) Siracusa will host the performances of classic Greek tragedies. These will take place at the Greek theatre, built in the 5th century BC …another great chance to photograph something unique.
We will work at 360°. The goal is to show the beauty of this land through your art and vision. Very often I discover new things about me and my work by listening to participants in my workshop and their work.
There will be group discussion, to better define the progress of the week work.
Daily meetings and critiques, discussion on how to find your way into the art-world. We will talk about presenting work, approach galleries, submit for grants.
Most part of the time will be dedicated to shooting.
Davide knows Siracusa extremely well, and under his guide you will find the right way to address your projects.
Davide Bramante was born in Siracusa in 1970. He lives and works in Siracusa.
"My way of photographing is the same as my way of remembering, thinking, dreaming, and hoping: everything comes about by temporal and spatial superimpositions". This is what the Sicilian artist Davide Bramante has said about his photographic work, which are at times compared to Futurism. But this is only a formal similarity.
His are simultaneous visions in which he recreates situations and abolishes the temporal categories of past, present, and future. His images of Dublin are part of a series, begun in 1998 and called My Own Rave, which undermines the Catholic and moral values of the city through the representation of provocative sexual icons.
For Bramante, the eternal wanderer, his works are a mirror of contemporary society. "The stratifications and veiling to be seen in each image take me back to my land and my people: in part we are Arabs, Normans, Byzantine, Spanish…"

ACCOMODATION AND MEALS
Lodging in Siracusa at this time of the year is easy to find and not very expensive.
We can help you in finding accommodation. Siracusa is full of hotels at different costs, B&B and private houses. We are in touch with a friend with some aprtments to rent, so let us know if you need help. The area we are planning to stay is in the ver centre of town, so there will be some restriction if you come by car - but you will not really need it!
Meals, except for the first inaugural dinner, will be independent and paid separately. Eating out in Siracusa is a great culinary experience and very good priced compared to Italian standards.
WHAT TO BRING
Bring your laptop, with everything that goes with it: cables, chargers, card readers, and your photo equipment. Bring an extra body, in case something happens to your camera, and we suggest bringing the minimum amount of lenses.
Consider an external hard disk to make a back up of your daily shooting.
