ARJA HYYTIAINENFROM DIARY TO FICTION
Summer Workshop 2017 • July 30 – August 5
I believe in translating emotion into images, feeling and experiencing life through photography, seeking and questioning, trying to see behind the visual reality. I’m interested in personal, self- experienced stories, the very individual language of expression. I can only speak about my own experiences in life which I have at some point decided to record in mainly photographic means, keeping a sort of archival or a trace of time. Often a small chapter of life, a period of which one understands only afterwards, becomes something slightly different in photographs, partly intentional, partly due to the time passing. Recomposing events in photographs with help of forgetting and adding. It is a sort of collect and edit work that becomes obsessional in some point. believe in translating emotion into images, feeling and experiencing life through photography, seeking and questioning, trying to see behind the visual reality. I’m interested in personal, self- experienced stories, the very individual language of expression. Editing diary to fiction meaning fictional storytelling using the everyday, diarist material.
We will start the workshop by a presentation where I will show my photographs so you can have an idea of who I am. Then I would like to get to know who you are by seeing your personal portfolios. I would prefer to see your images on paper rather than on a computer screen. We will also see works of others that have had influence on me. Later on we will make a practical workshop on a theme that each of you can identify with. I would like each of you to work around and question the theme, person, storyline that is the most important to you right now. We will shoot, edit and find a form of presentation to the work done over the workshop days.
the workshop is open for both amateur and professional photographers. For anyone who is seeking to deepen and enlarge the images and expression in personal storytelling.
Requirements and technique: Participants can work in any technique/s they feel comfortable with. You can also combine text and image, drawing, sound or any other means of expression you feel suitable for your work.
