TPW Destination Workshops

Many of you have had the chance to attend our courses in Tuscany, working side by side with internationally famous instructors. The courses in Tuscany provide you with the tools for improving your vision and how to tell a story with images.
Naturally, the daily life in the areas where we hold the workshops has been the same – and we hope will remain that way! – for a long time.

From here springs the desire and the curiosity to explore new horizons – physical and abstract - and to use out in the field the experience acquired in the Tuscany workshops.

For some years, we have introduced workshops in various locations in order to give you the opportunity to continue these projects in different places while maintaining the spirit that characterizes the TPW workshops.
The destination workshops offer the possibility to visit exotic places and to photograph people and landscapes under the expert guidance of qualified instructors and the friendly and professional staff of TPW, while supported by local people for the logistics.

During these workshops, contact with the other participants and the instructor is constant. The groups are small (around 12 participants) and the spirit of the workshop is to create many individual photographic projects, also using multimedia, that will then be combined into a collective vision of the place where we are located.
We often have local participants in the workshop that enrich the group dynamics.

The Spirit of the Workshop
The courses are directed towards those who want to explore new destinations and, at the same time, be able to count on the organization of TPW. It is not a tourist trip. On the contrary, places that are major tourist attractions are often avoided. We concentrate more on particular aspects, such as the people and the daily life of the place. We will try to maximize our time. Therefore, be ready to work hard, get up early to photograph unusual situations, work at night to edit your work… considering that the experience often involves long trips far from home, we recommend that you take a day or two more, after the workshop, to visit the places without the pressure of the workshop…

Equipment
The participants must have a good working knowledge of their equipment.
The workshops are in digital photography in order to facilitate the speed of editing. If you want to photograph in film, you can do it, but, there will not be the technical possibility to critique this material, and we recommend that you develop the material at home. Bring your laptop with the software that you prefer for editing installed on it.
Bring also memory cards, an extra hard disk for downloading the images and to have as a back-up, extra batteries, and try to find out in advance which type of electricity adaptor you will need.
With reference to photographic equipment, we suggest TRAVELLING LIGHT! For some obscure reason, a backpack that weighs 4 kg in the morning becomes heavier during the day…
We recommend bringing a reflex camera and a smaller camera, both equipped with high aperture lenses to give you the possibility of photographing in all light conditions. Since multimedia is taking on more importance, we suggest that you also bring a small digital recorder to record sounds and voices that can then be part of your presentation.

Hotel
We usually choose hotels based on the atmosphere, and we are not interested in a five-star hotel with a pool or other amenities…for us it is important to be in a comfortable place that has a personality that reflects the TPW philosophy, located where the action is, so we can walk out of the hotel and find ourselves immediately in contact with the people of the place. Usually, we reserve about 10 rooms in these accommodations for the staff and for the participants who intend to join us. Each person is free to find alternative solutions (friends, other hotels, houses, etc.), but we suggest that you find something close to us. The hotel is often the place where we meet for critiquing, editing, etc.

Meals
Participants will be responsible for the cost of meals apart from those included in the cost of the workshop. During the day, one is often independent and works on projects in various places, so it is better to organize lunch on your own. The evening meal will be decided day by day. It’s usually a good time for meeting, socializing, and discussing the day’s experience.

Arrival
The workshops begin at 3:00pm on the starting day in order to allow all the participants to arrive conveniently. If possible, we recommend arriving the evening before. Our locations are reachable by public means of transportation. If you need particular assistance for the transfer from and to the airport or train station, let us know and we will organize accordingly. In case it becomes necessary to rent cars for the workshop, the costs are divided among the participants.

Advice
We will try to provide you with a series of preliminary readings for each individual workshop. Remember that the web is an endless source of information (and sometimes even too much!). Take off with the attitude of a curious traveller and absorb the essence of the trip.

TPW Destination Workshops

Molti di voi hanno avuto l’occasione di frequentare i nostri corsi in Toscana, lavorando fianco a fianco con tutor di fama internazionale.
I corsi in Toscana vi forniscono gli strumenti per migliorare la vostra visione e come raccontare una storia con immagini. Naturalmente, la vita quotidiana nelle zone in cui teniamo i nostri workshop, è la stessa - e speriamo rimanga tale ! - da lungo tempo.

Da qui nasce la voglia e la curiosità di esplorare nuovi confini - fisici e mentali - e applicare sul campo l’esperienza accumulata nei corsi in Toscana.

Da alcuni anni abbiamo introdotto workshop in altre location, per dare l’opportunità di continuare i propri progetti in luoghi diversi, mantenendo lo spirito che caratterizza i workshop del TPW.
I destination workshop offrono la possibilità di visitare luoghi esotici, fotografare nuovi volti e paesaggi, sotto la guida esperta di tutor qualificati e dello staff cordiale e professionale del TPW, affiancati da persone del luogo per la logistica.

Durante questi workshop, il contatto con gli altri partecipanti e il tutor è costante, i gruppi sono di dimensioni modeste (circa12 partecipanti) e lo spirito del workshop è quello di realizzare tanti singoli reportage, anche usando multimedia, che alla fine si condensino in una visone collettiva del luogo in cui ci troviamo.
Spesso durante i workshop abbiamo anche partecipanti locali, che arricchiscono la dinamica del gruppo.

Spirito del Workshop
I corsi sono indicati a chi vuole esplorare nuove destinazioni, e al tempo stesso poter contare sull’organizzazione del TPW. Non è un viaggio turistico, anzi, spesso i luoghi di maggiore attrazione vengono evitati, ma ci concentriamo più sulle persone e sulla vita quotidiana di un luogo, su aspetti particolari. Cercheremo di utilizzare il tempo al massimo, quindi siate pronti a lavorare sodo, alzarvi presto per fotografare situazioni insolite, lavorare di notte per editare il vostro lavoro…vi consigliamo, considerando che spesso si tratta di viaggi lunghi e lontano da casa, di prendervi un giorno o due in più, dopo il workshop, per visitare i luoghi senza la pressione del workshop…

Attrezzatura
I partecipanti devono avere una buona conoscenza della loro attrezzatura.
Sono workshop in digitale, per facilitare la velocità nell’editing. Se qualcuno vuole scattare in pellicola, può farlo ma consigliamo di portare il materiale da sviluppare a casa, e comunque non ci sarà la possibilità tecnica di criticare questo materiale. Portate il vostro laptop, sul quale deve essere istallato il software che preferite per l’editing.
Portate anche schede di memoria, un hard disk supplementare per scaricare le immagini e avere un back-up, batterie supplementari e cercate di sapere prima di quale tipo di adattatore avrete bisogno.
Per quello che riguarda l’attrezzatura fotografica, vi consigliamo di VIAGGIARE LEGGERI!. Per qualche oscura legge, uno zaino che pesa 4 Kg alla mattina, aumenta il suo peso durante la giornata….
Vi consigliamo una reflex e una macchina più piccola, comunque dotate di obbiettivi luminosi per darvi possibilità di scattare in ogni condizione di luce. Visto l’importanza che sta assumendo il multimedia, vi consigliamo anche un piccolo registratore digitale, per registrare suoni e voci che possono poi essere parte della vostra presentazione.

Hotel
Di solito scegliamo hotel che privilegiano l’atmosfera, non ci interessano hotel a 5 stelle con piscina o altro...per noi è importante essere in un kuogo comodo e con un suo carattere che rispecchi la filosofia TPW, nel centro dell’azione per poter uscire dall’hotel e trovarci subito a contatto con la gente del luogo. Solitamente prenotiamo una decina di camere in questi alberghi, per lo staff e per i partecipanti che intendono unirsi a noi. Ognuno è libero di trovare soluzioni alternative (amici, altri hotel, case ecc), suggeriamo però di trovare sistemazioni vicino a noi. Spesso l’hotel è anche il luogo in cui ci incontriamo per critica, editing ecc.

Pasti
I pasti, a parte quelli compresi nel costo del workshop, sono a carico dei partecipanti. Durante la giornata si è spesso indipendenti e si lavora su progetti in vari luoghi, ed è meglio organizzarsi da soli. La sera, decideremo di volta in volta in volta. È di solito un buon momento per incontrarsi, socializzare e discutere l’esperienza della giornata.

Arrivo
I workshop iniziano alle 15 del giorno stabilito, per permettere a tutti i partecipanti di arrivare comodamente. Se possibile, vi consigliamo di arrivare la sera prima. I nostri luoghi sono raggiungibile con mezzi pubblici, se vi ocorre particolare assistenza per il trasporto da e per l’aeroporto o stazione, fatecelo sapere e ci organizzeremo di conseguenza. Nel caso sia necessario noleggiare automobili per il workshop, i costi vengono divisi tra i partecipanti.


Consigli
Cercheremo di fornirvi un a serie di letture preliminare per ogni singolo workshop, ricordate che il web è una fonte inesauribile (a volte anche troppo!) di informazioni.
Partite con lo spirito del viaggiatore e del curioso, assorbite l’essenza del viaggio. Rileggetevi Itaca, di Kavafis….
