Greetings to all and welcome to the TPW website.

The year 2010 will once again be a year of changes and interesting proposals.
It’s almost impossible to keep track of how the workshop scenario has changed in the past years: when we began, we were the only ones “doing” workshops. I remember the dismay at the post offices here in Italy when I had to send a parcel and specify the sender…the word workshop just couldn’t be digested…a more cultured employee said “of course, shop of work!” – as if he had discovered a great truth, others required me to spell the word, and others still began launching impossible blunders – one example, WAR-SHOW…
If nothing else, I can assert with pride that I definitely contributed to the popularization of this word in home country…

But, indeed, times have changed. Now, workshops are everywhere and everyone is doing workshops. There are many offers for participants , they can choose those which are closer to their needs.

We are moving forward, and for 2010 we are proposing new ideas: in addition to our “classic” workshops in Tuscany – we have concentrated 20 workshops in two weeks – we are launching a new project, TPW Light, dedicated almost entirely to new technologies.
We are doing this because we see that photography is running towards new territories, and a new language (such as multimedia) and we want to help educate the photographers of tomorrow and bring them closer to these new challenges.
TPW Light because, as we were already doing years ago, we would like to offer a low-cost version of our workshops.
These workshops, in fact, will be organized differently, from a logical point of view, from the “classic” workshops.
Room and board will not be managed by us, but the participants will have to make their own arrangements –based on information that we provide, however – and be independent for meals…even if, however, there will be a couple of dinners together and the projection of the finale…attention: there is an advantage to all this. The cost of the workshops has been reduced and, by choosing your own accommodations, you will be able adapt costs to your budget.
In addition, for these TPW Light workshops, we will move to another location, the town of Anghiari in the province of Arezzo, which we chose after a long evaluation of proposals… if you are enthusiasts of TPW, you should trust our new choice: have we ever disappointed you?!? You will have the possibility to explore a new part of Tuscany, different from the Val d’Orcia, where we have been for years and where the two weeks of traditional courses will take place.

We have also updated our destination workshops with new locations, Vietnam and Istanbul, and we will return more than willingly to India, in Calcutta, and to Transylvania.
Sicily remains one of our favourite destinations in the spring, and we are working on other Light opportunities for autumn.

In addition, we will continue the project Passion & Profession in two different locations.

The things that will not change are those we have been renowned for throughout all these years: the lightness, yet seriousness, with which we conduct our workshops.

We mean lightness in the highest sense of the word. We do not believe in traditional classrooms, but in a system of learning based on the exchange of personal experiences and on the desire to cover some ground together. We organize the work behind the scenes with seriousness so that all of you, after an hour at TPW, feel at ease and comfortable in a place that will seem as if you’ve always known it but haven’t been there in a long time…
Many years ago, a student in Arno Minkkinen’s course told me that TPW stood for “Totally Perfect World”… we then decided with Arno that it was the fact that it was an “Almost Perfect World” that made TPW so unique, and from then on we strongly believe in that word, almost…

You will see old friends, and you will make new ones. You will be confused, frustrated, disappointed, and immediately after enlightened, purposeful, and elated….

You will return home bewildered, but the best is yet to arrive… it’s in the months following your week at TPW that the memories will emerge, and you will begin to apply techniques and suggestions learned and taken from the workshop. The emails, the groups on Facebook, and the tweets on Twitter with people you met will begin… and then you will understand that the invested time and money in TPW was one of the best gifts you gave yourself in recent years.

If you have been to TPW at least once, you know what I’m talking about.

Buongiorno a tutti, e benvenuti sul sito di TPW.

Il 2010 sarà ancora una volta un anno di cambiamenti e di proposte interessanti.
Non possiamo non tenere conto di come lo scenario dei workshop sia cambiato in questi anni: quando abbiamo iniziato, eravamo gli unici a “fare” workshop. Ricordo lo sgomento negli uffici postali quando dovevo inviare un plico e specificare il mittente…la parola workshop proprio non veniva digerita…qualche impiegato più acculturato diceva “certo, negozio-lavoro!” – come se avesse detto una grande verità, altri mi obbligavano allo spelling, gli altri si lanciavano in strafalcioni impossibili - uno per tutti,WAR-SHOW….

Se non altro, posso asserire con orgoglio di avere sicuramente contribuito alla divulgazione di questa parola in Ialia…

Ma appunto i tempi sono cambiati, ora si fanno workshop dappertutto e tutti fanno workshop. Maggior offerta per i partecipanti, che possono scegliere quelli più vicino alle loro esigenze.

Noi andiamo avanti, e per il 2010 proponiamo nuove idee: di fianco ai nostri workshop “classici” in Toscana - abbiamo concentrato 20 workshop su due settimane - lanciamo un nuovo progetto, TPW Light, dedicato quasi interamente alle nuove tecnologie.
Questo perché come tutti ci rendiamo conto che la fotografia sta correndo verso nuovi territori e verso un nuovo linguaggio (vedi il multimedia), e vogliamo aiutare a formare i fotografi di domani e avvicinarli alle nuove sfide. E anche perché, fino a che queste “materie” non saranno fonte di insegnamento nella nostre scuole, sentiamo il dovere di contribuire a questa diffusione.
TPWLight perché, come già facemmo anni fa, vorremmo offrire una versione low-cost dei nostri workshops.
Questi workshop, infatti , saranno organizzati diversamente, da un punto di vista logistico, da quelli “classici”.
Il vitto e alloggio non saranno gestiti da noi ma i partecipanti dovranno trovare da soli questa sistemazione – su indicazioni che comunque forniremo – ed essere indipendenti per quello che riguarda i pasti…anche se comunque ci saranno un paio di cene in comune e la proiezione finale…attenzione: tutto questo però ha un vantaggio, il costo dei workshop è stato ridotto e, scegliendo sistemazione individuali, riuscirete a ritagliarvi costi personalizzati.
In più, per questi workshop Light, ci sposteremo in un’altra location, il paese di Anghiari, in provincia di Arezzo, che abbiamo scelto dopo una lunga valutazione e proposte…se siete aficionados del TPW dovete fidarvi di questa nostra nuova scelta: vi abbiamo mai deluso?!? E avrete la possibilità di esplorare una nuova parte di Toscana, diversa dalla Val d’Orcia, dove ci troviamo da anni e dove si svolgeranno le due settimane di corsi tradizionali.

Abbiamo anche aggiornato i nostri destination workshops con nuove mete, Vietnam e Istanbul, e torneremo più che volentieri in India, a Kolkata, e in Transilvania.
La Sicilia resta una delle nostre mete favorite in Primavera, e stiamo lavorando su altre soluzioni Light per l’autunno.

In più, continueremo il progetto Passion & Profession, in due sedi diverse.

Le cose che invece non cambieranno sono quelle che ci hanno resi popolari in questi anni: la leggerezza e serietà con la quale conduciamo i nostri workshop:
Leggerezza nel senso più alto della parola, non crediamo nelle aule tradizionali, ma ad un sistema di apprendimento basato sulle scambio di esperienze personali, e di voglia di fare un pezzo di strada insieme. Serietà è quella con la quale organizziamo il lavoro dietro le quinte, in modo che tutti voi, dopo un’ora al TPW, vi sentiate a vostro agio, in un luogo che vi sembra di conoscere da sempre, e dove non tornavate da un po’…. Molti anni fa uno studente nel corso di Arno Minkkinen mi disse che TPW stava per "Totally Perfect World"…con Arno abbiamo poi deciso che quello che rendeva il TPW così unico era il fatto che fosse un "Almost Perfect World", e da allora ci teniamo molto a quella parola, almost.

Rivedrete vecchi amici, ne farete di nuovi, sarete confusi, frustrati, delusi, e subito dopo illuminati, propositivi, euforici….

Tornerete a casa ancora frastornati, ma il bello dovrà ancora arrivare…..è nei mesi successivi alla vostra settimana al TPW infatti che i ricordi emergono, comincerete a applicare tecniche e suggerimenti appresi e rimossi durante il workshop, iniziano le mail e i gruppi di Facebook e i tweets con le persone conosciute…e lì capirete che l’investimento di tempo e denaro dedicato al TPW è stato uno dei migliori regali che vi siete fati negli ultimi anni.

Se siete stati al TPW almeno una volta, sapete di cosa sto parlando.
