“I don’t know where to begin from. I don’t think photography is something you can teach. I don’t want to impose a method, nor a style. The most important thing is to be open about who you are and what you want to say. I will not have a real schedule to offer you. My efforts will be to deconstruct the used and abused points of reference in photography and help you to confront with yourself in a immediate way. Photographing will become a simple and direct way to be closer to who and what you love, rather than a technical excuse to hide behind. A street, a wall, a story, a person, ourselves, all those things together, whatever you like. I am against dividing photography into categories: for me documentary photography, social photography, personal photography, landscape, portraiture, etc do not mean a thing. What is important is the attention you pay to what you do. Good photographs, are such because they are true, genuine. They become so when you try to reach the truth that is inside you and follow your personal vision. Forget yourself, put yourself in a uncomfortable situation, don’t be afraid, enjoy all these things. Well, these are the things I keep repeating to myself every morning in front of the mirror .”

Lorenzo Castore was born in 1973 in Florence and moved to Rome in 1981. He began his career in photography in 1997, studying photography while still attending the University of Law. In 1999 he spent one year in New York. In the same year he travelled to India and exhibited at the Gallery di Via Minerva in Rome. In 1999 he won the second edition of the “Dintorni dello Sguardo” Award. He worked in Kosovo, India, New York (his exhibition, “Babylon, New York” was partially on 9/11), Poland “Szczesc Boze” and Cuba “Paradiso”. He documented the construction of the Arcimboldi Theater and of Pirelli’s Headquarters. His show “Paradiso” was exhibited at Grazia Neri Gallery in Milan and at the VU Gallery in Paris. He also exhibited his work “Nero” at Torre Littoria in Carbonia, at Palazzo Reale in Milan and in Cracow during the Month of Photography. Federico Motta published the book on this show. His photographs are a part of the collection of the Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna in Rome. In 2005 he works in Germany, Italy, France, Poland and England. His work is published in magazines such as Amica, Ventiquattro and Internazionale. In 2005 he has also won the Leica European Publishers’ Award for Photography. He is represented internationally by VU agency and in Italy by Grazia Neri Agency.

“Non so da dove incominciare. Non credo che la fotografia si possa insegnare. Non voglio proporre un metodo o uno stile. La cosa che per me conta di piu' é l'apertura nei confronti di quello che si é e di quello che si ha da dire. Quindi non ho un vero e proprio programma da proporre, se non cercare di togliere comodi punti di riferimento, ed aiutare a fare lo sforzo di confrontarsi con se stessi in modo immediato, e fotografare di conseguenza, facendo in modo che la fotografia non sia un espediente tecnico-stilistico dietro cui nascondersi, ma un mezzo semplice e diretto per essere in comunione con ciò che amiamo. Una strada, un muro, una storia, una persona, noi stessi, tutte queste cose insieme, quello che preferite. Non ho mai trovato il minimo interesse nelle catalogazioni: per me riferirsi alla fotografia giornalistica, sociale, personale, di paesaggio, ritrattistica etc non significa assolutamente niente. L'unica cosa che conta é la cura che si mette in quello che si fa; le belle fotografie sono tali in quanto vere, autentiche, e lo diventano, di più o di meno, nella misura in cui si tende alla verità che abbiamo dentro, ognuno assecondando la propria differente natura, che ha tante sfumature. Dimenticare se stessi, mettersi a disagio, non aver paura, godere di tutte queste cose. Insomma, tutte le cose che mi ripeto ogni mattina quando mi guardo allo specchio.”

Lorenzo Castore è nato a Firenze il 22 giugno 1973 ma si trasferisce a Roma nel 1981. Comincia la sua attività già nel 1997, studiando privatamente fotografia, mentre sta ancora frequentando Giurisprudenza all'Università dove si laurea nel 1999. Nel 1997 è a New York e nello stesso anno fa il suo primo viaggio in India ed espone alla Galleria di via Minerva a Roma. Nel 1999 vince la seconda edizione del premio "Dintorni dello sguardo". Ha lavorato in Kosovo, India, New York ('Babylon, New York' - in parte riguardante l'11 settembre), Polonia 'Szczesc Boze/Dio ti protegga' e Cuba 'Paradiso'. Ha documentato la costruzione del teatro degli Arcimboldi e di Pirelli Headquarters. Il suo lavoro "Paradiso" è stato esposto alla Galleria Grazia Neri a Milano e alla Galleria Vu a Parigi; "Nero" è stato esposto alla Torre Littoria a Carbonia, a Palazzo Reale a Milano e a Cracovia durante il Mese della Fotografia. Federico Motta editore ha pubblicato il libro omonimo. Alcune sue fotografie fanno parte della collezione permanente di fotografia della Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna di Roma. Nel 2005 ha lavorato in Germania, Italia, Francia, Polonia e Inghilterra. Ha pubblicato su Amica, Ventiquattro e Internazionale. Sempre nel 2005 ha vinto il Leica European Publishers’ Award for Photography. È rappresentato all'estero da VU e in Italia dall'agenzia Grazia Neri.
