Photography is such a great tool to tell a story. Words are sometimes necessary but not indispensable. If you work on a story a long time you actually understand what you want to tell and how to show it. It requires a long breath and determination. Basically it starts with the fact that you now what you want to tell and that you know it is a story which can be told visually.
So how to choose your subject? How to research? How to build contacts? How can I finance?
The workshop will not be a ready to go recipe, but it will generate ideas and inspiration.
This is a workshop on how to find  stories,  how to shoot them and propose to photo-editors. Before starting working on a project we feel involved with, we have to have  a close examination on its possible making and on problems we can meet along the way, and more than anything decide it this story will be powerful and speak out through the images. Each participant will concentrate on a story to develop during the length of the workshop, as if it were personal project to propose to a magazine.

Kadir van Lohuizen has covered conflicts in Africa and elsewhere, but is probably best known for his projects on seven rivers of the world and the diamond industry. He has received numerous prizes, including two World Press Photo awards and recently won Visa d’Or at Perpignan Visa pour l’Image He has twice been a World Press Photo Contest jury member, and has published four photo books he most recent is Diamond Matters. Kadir is based in Amsterdam and New York.

La fotografia è un ottimo strumento per raccontare una storia. Le parole sono a volte necessarie,  mai indispensabili. Se lavori su una storia per un lungo periodo ti rendi conto di quello che vuoi dire e di come lo vuoi dire. Un progetto a lungo termine necessita di un ampio respiro e di determinazione. In sostanza, si parte dal presupposto che tu sai che cosa vuoi dire e  che la tua storia è una storia che può essere raccontata con le immagini.
Quindi come scegliere il tuo soggetto, la tua storia? Come fare ricerca? Come procurarsi i contatti? Come finanziarsi?
Il workshop non sarà un manuale di istruzioni per l’uso, ma genererà idee e ispirazioni.

Questo workshop si concentra su come trovare soggetti di interesse generale, su come realizzarli e presentarli  a photo-editor. Prima di iniziare a lavorare a un progetto che ci appassiona, dobbiamo fare un esame sulla sua possibile realizzazione e difficoltà che si possono incontrare, ma soprattutto sul fatto che sia una storia visualmente potente e che “parli” attraverso  le immagini. Ogni partecipante deve pensare a una storia che potrà poi sviluppare nell’arco del workshop, come se fosse un incarico da proporre a un giornale.

Kadir van Lohuizen ha fotografato conflitti in Africa, ma è universalmente noto per i suoi progetti sui Sette Fiumi del mondo e il lavoro sull’industria dei diamanti.
Ha ricevuto numerosi premi, tra cui due World Press Photo awards e recentemente il Visa d’Or a Perpignan.
E’ stato per due anni nella giuria del World Press Photo.  ha pubblicato 4 libri, tra cui il recente Diamond Matters
