For years, TPW has planned workshops in Sicily during the Easter Processions. We usually look at Easter Processions not as a single event, but as part of life and spirit of Sicily. We will follow the last 4 days of the processions and, at the same time, full of this strong visual and emotional experience, plunge ourselves into Sicily’s everyday life and culture. In the days leading up to Easter, in every Sicilian town, processions are carried out bringing to life the Passion of Christ. The Christian component goes side by side with the pagan element, resulting in the creation of unique rituals which are completely different from all the others taking place in the rest of Italy. Our workshop will start on Wednesday, in order to be ready to shoot on Holy Thursday. We will start following the processions in the villages on the Eastern part of the island, in the little towns with very few inhabitants and where there is a greater intimacy and a strongly felt sense of the religious tradition than in the larger, more well-known processions. We will go out at night and witness the most crucial moments of the processions and we will move from town to town, often finding ourselves on country roads, in order to reach the places where this ritual is celebrated in a humble yet potent way. On Easter Monday we will visit some of the villages on the East coast. We will spend all day on Tuesday editing the work produced during the week.
Our center will be in Scicli.
Accommodation will be in double or single rooms, breakfast is included. Lunches and dinners will be paid separately. We strongly recommend to shoot digital:in fact labs will be closed for at last three days, and it could be hard to get film processed on time for the Tuesday night slide-show. Please bring your own laptop in order to download images and prepare your edit.
We will rent cars to share between 3 students. The cost for rental is about Euro 200 per student, including unlimited Km and insurance. The closest airport to fly into is Catania, which is one and a half hour away from Scicli.

Da anni organizziamo il workshop sulle Processioni Pasquali che si svolgono ogni primavera in Sicilia. Affrontiamo le processioni pasquali non come un’entità a se stante, ma come parte della vita e dello spirito della Sicilia. Seguiremo le processioni solo per gli ultimi quattro giorni e contemporaneamente entreremo nella vita di tutti i giorni e nel cuore della cultura siciliana. Il workshop inizierà il mercoledì prima di Pasqua, in modo da poter essere attivi già da Giovedì Santo. Approfitteremo di questi momenti per seguire le piccole processioni nella parte orientale dell’isola, che hanno luogo in paesi di non molti abitanti, dove però c’è un’intimità e un senso della religione più forte che nelle processioni maggiori. Viaggeremo di notte, per essere presenti durante i momenti cruciali delle processioni, e ci sposteremo di paese in paese, spesso su strade di campagna, per raggiungere i luoghi dove, in maniera umile ma fortemente sentita, si celebra questo rituale, per arrivare fino al culmine del giorno di Pasqua. Successivamente, dal Lunedì di Pasqua in poi, giorno di passaggio tra il sacro e il pagano, ci muoveremo nei paesi della costa Sud-Est dell’isola.
Il giorno di martedì sarà dedicato all’editing del materiale scattato, per la proiezione finale della sera.
La base del workshop è a Scicli.
La sistemazione è in camere a due letti e camere singole e comprende la prima colazione. Altri pranzi o cene verranno conteggiati separatamente, e quando saremo on location, divideremo i costi dei pasti. Per motivi pratici consigliamo caldamente l’uso di fotocamere digitali. I laboratori saranno chiusi per 3 giorni consecutivi, e potrebbe esser complicato riuscire ad avere tutto il materiale in tempo per la proiezione di martedì sera. Portate con sé il computer portatile per poter scaricare le immagini e preparare l’editing del proprio lavoro.. Noleggeremo automobili da dividersi ogni per tre studenti. Il costo è di circa Euro 200 per studente, comprende kilometraggio illimitato e assicurazioni. L’aeroporto consigliato è quello di Catania, che dista meno di un’ora da Scicli.
