The camera is a passport and it affords access to unfamiliar worlds which we document in order for others to understand. Today photojournalism is often perceived as the province of the Four Horseman, war, famine, pestilence and plague, but it is equally important to document other sides of life, especially in our accelerated and rapidly changing society.  And there are thousands of untold stories out there, often right under our noses, and this workshop will be based on this principle.

We will be working on picture stories, in and around the local area. We will explore the inception, construction and above all, the visual language of picture stories. We will look at depicting environments and people living, breathing, working and playing through a well-told picture essay of up to 12 images. You will be photographing from dawn till dusk, so be prepared for some hard, but fun, work! We will be on hand at all times to discuss your ideas, guide you through the process and review your pictures.

Aside from your folios, which we will go through on day one, you will need to bring a photo book and/or essay by some other photographer and discuss why you like (or hate!) it. All picture stories require basic research so we would like you to do some homework on the immediate area, so that you have a geographical and topographical grasp of the place before you arrive. Ideally after this basic research, you should have some preliminary ideas for stories that you may like to photograph. You can shoot a general theme, or something more intimate. People and/or places. We will then discuss everything on day one and work out ideas fully before you start shooting. Shoot either film or digital but please bear in mind that we have limited time, and producing photographs is preferable to waiting for film to turnaround.

Picture stories work at their best when printed in book or magazine form and as a documentary photographer with two books published, I firmly believe in working with designers who can take my work to another level with their ability to understand and envisage the project as a whole on the printed page. So at the end of the week we will complete the process and edit and sequence your stories. We will work with designer Henrietta Molinaro to create a final book of your picture stories in one volume, just as a magazine or photo book would be created. Thus your essays will be treated individually according to their nature and, when collated in this form, will comprise a complete visual record of the area. The book will then be available  online to order. By the end of this workshop we hope you will have used your camera as a passport to an original situation, experienced the traditional and wonderful visual language of picture stories with a tangible end result, and moreover have developed as photographers yourselves.

Jocelyn Bain Hogg began his career as a unit photographer on movie sets after studying Documentary Photography at Newport Art College. He shot publicity for the BBC, photographed fashion and now works on documentary projects and commercial and editorial assignments.

His main interest lies in tracing our desires and aspirations in the so-called ‘First World’. His first book, The Firm, is an intimate and unflinching journey into the dark heart of violence documenting the British criminal underworld, which won international acclaim, garnering Germany’s prestigious Lead award. The work was exhibited at Moscow’s Pobeda gallery in September/October 2007.

His second book Idols + Believers, is a decade long examination into the unhealthy obsession with fame and celebrity and its palliative effect in our troubled world. The book projects, continue with work–in-progress on London - Tired of Life, a co-author collaboration with artist Paul Davis and designer Henrietta Molinaro and Pleasure Island, which looks at the age-old tradition of hedonism in Ibiza via the Summer festival of Ibiza Rocks.

His work is regularly seen in numerous publications including Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, the Sunday Times, The Independent, The Observer, Elle, Marie Claire, Stern, GQ, Esquire, Le Monde and La Republicca. He is currently a visiting lecturer on the MA photojournalism course at the London College of Communication.

Henrietta Molinaro is a graphic designer and artist of English and Italian origin. She grew up in Montepulciano, Tuscany and studied in Florence, Rome and London, where she graduated from the London College of Communication with a First Class Honours Degree in graphic design and illustration.

She is based in London and has worked for Pentagram and Atelier Works design groups. Currently she works freelance, on both creative and commercial projects, specializing in editorial and book design. Recent work includes photographer Seamus Murphy’s Afghanistan – A Darkness Visible, Saqi 2008, John Berger’s The Red Tenda of Bologna, the Drawbridge 2007 (co-designer) and branding for Pratham NGO fundraising events.

She is working on several book projects including Seamus Murphy’s Angelus, David Graham’s No Diving, Jocelyn Bain Hogg's Pleasure Island, a chronological book on the Beatles, and is co-author with artist Paul Davis and Jocelyn Bain Hogg on a joint London book project, Tired of Life.

Lavoreremo su picture-stories, nell’area intorno al nostro monastero. Esploreremo come iniziare a costruire una storia fotografica, e soprattutto il linguaggio fotografico a lei collegata. Nostro scopo è quello di raffigurare i luoghi e le persone attraverso una picture- story di 12 immagini. Si fotografa dall’alba al tramonto, preparatevi ad un lavoro complesso – ma anche stimolante! Saremo a disposizione in qualsiasi momento per discutere delle vostre idee, aiutarvi e visionare le vostre foto.

Oltre al vostro portfolio, che sarà esaminato il primo giorno, dovrete portare anche un libro o una storia di qualche altro fotografo, e spiegare perché vi piace ( o lo detestate!)

Tutte le storie hanno bisogno di un minimo di ricerca preliminare, e sarebbe utile che vi informaste sull’area prima di arrivare al workshop. In pratica, dopo questa prima ricerca, dovreste avere un’idea più chiara di quello che vorreste fotografare. Potete decidere di fotografare un tema generale, o qualcosa di più intimo. Gente e/o luoghi. Discuteremo di tutto ciò il primo giorno e svilupperemo le idee prima che andiate fuori a fotografare. Potete scattare sia in pellicola che in digitale, ma tenete presente che il tempo è limitato, lo sviluppo della pellicola richiede tempi più lunghi, che sarebbe meglio utilizzare per scattare.

Le picture - stories rendono al massimo quando sono pubblicate su un libro o rivista. Come fotografo con due libri pubblicati, credo fermamente nel lavorare con designers che possono portare il mio lavoro ad un livello superiore con la loro capacità di comprendere e raffigurare un progetto come una cosa unica sulla pagina stampata. Così, alla fine della settimana, completeremo il progetto e sceglieremo e metteremo in sequenza le vostre storie, avvalendoci dell’aiuto della designer Henrietta Molinaro per creare un libro finale. In questo modo le vostre storie saranno trattate in maniera individuale a seconda del loro tema, e insieme alle altre rappresenteranno un progetto generale sull’area trattata. Il libro sarà messo on-line per essere poi ordinato separatamente.

Al termine di questo workshop speriamo che abbiate usato la macchina fotografica come un lasciapassare per nuove situazioni, che abbiate sperimentato l’affascinante linguaggio delle photo-stories con un buon risultato finale, e soprattutto che siate cresciuti personalmente come fotografi.

Jocelyn Bain Hogg ha iniziato la sua carriera come fotografo di set cinematografici dopo aver studiato Documentary Photography al Newport Art College. Ha scattato una campagna pubblicitaria per la BBC, fotografato il mondo della moda e attualmente lavora su progetti di fotografia documentaria, commerciale, editoriale.
Il suo maggiore interesse rimane quello di tracciare i nostri desideri ed aspirazioni in quello che viene chiamato “Primo Mondo”. Il suo primo libro The Firm, documenta attraverso una visione intima e al tempo stesso rigoroso il cuore nero della violenza ritraendo i criminali inglesi. Il libro ha avuto plauso internazionale , vincendo il Prestigioso Lead Award in Germania. Le immagini sono state esposte alla Galleria Pobeda di Mosca in Settembre/ottobre 2007.
Il suo secondo libro Idols+Belivers, rappresenta un lavoro decennale nel mondo, poco salutare, dell’ossessione della fama e della celebrità, ma anche dei suoi effetti sul nostro mondo agitato.
I suoi progetti continuano con un work-in-progress –book assieme all’artista Paul Davis, intitolato London-Tired of life, la cui parte grafica è affidata a Henrietta Molinaro, e Pleasure Islands che guarda all’antica tradizione edonista ad Ibiza durante il Summer festival of Ibiza Rocks.
