This workshop is for advanced photographers who want to take their editorial or personal work to the next level. Photographer Bruno Stevens, and former National Geographic picture editor and director of photography Kent Kobersteen, will challenge the students to produce their very best work on subjects about which they feel strongly.
The workshop will stress finding and researching story subjects, photographing people in an intimate fashion, making photographs that communicate emotionally as well as editorially, and using aesthetics in a sophisticated manner. Workshop participants will be encouraged to take professional risks, and will be expected to produce top quality work worthy of major publications, books or galleries. Photographers should come prepared to find and research a topic, and produce a complete and edited story during the week.

Kent and Bruno will openly share the techniques and approaches photographers use in the field to create work for National Geographic Magazine and other publications. They will also discuss business aspects of photography, such as creating a strong portfolio, approaching editors and getting assignments, finding the right agency, developing a lasting relationship with a publication, and photography in the electronic media.

Throughout the week editing and reducing a large body of work to the strongest presentation will be stressed. In individual meetings with the students the instructors will give advice on portfolios and career aspirations.

Stevens and Kobersteen will give the students a varied and realistic perspective on the business of editorial photography and on their individual photographic work.

After working more than 20 years in the music business, Bruno Stevens (B. 1959) decided to become a photojournalist in 1998. He has worked in Mexico, Haiti, ex-Yugoslavia, Chechnya, Afghanistan, India, Israel, Palestine, Iraq and most recently Darfur, Libya, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Uganda, Pakistan, Somalia, Angola, Lebanon and Cambodia... Bruno Stevens is focusing on the fate of civilian populations in tension or war zones, his work is often published in Stern, Libération, The Sunday Times Magazine, Newsweek, Paris-Match as well as many others. He works regularly for Human Rights Watch, MSF (Doctors Without Borders), Handicap International and the U.N. World Food Program. He won 3 distinctions at the World Press Photo in the last 5 years as well as one on the 2005 POY and one on the 2006 BOP."

Kent Kobersteen spent twenty-one years at the National Geographic magazine, first as a picture editor and later as the Director of Photography.  Prior to going to the Geographic he was a photographer at the Minneapolis (Minnesota) Tribune for eighteen years, and the editor of the Tribune’s Sunday magazine. As Director of Photography at the National Geographic he was responsible for assigning the photography for the magazine and participated with the senior staff of the magazine in story selection and conceptualization.  He has photographed, lectured and conducted workshops throughout the world.  This is his ninth year at TPW.

Questo workshop è per fotografi avanzati che vogliono portare ad un livello successivo il loro lavoro editoriale o personale. Il fotografo Bruno Stevens del National Geografic e Kent Kobersteen, prima editore e poi direttore della fotografia del National Geographic, spingeranno gli studenti ad ottenere il meglio, lavorando su temi che sentono particolarmente vicini.

Durante il workshop una particolare attenzione alla ricerca dei temi, fotografando le persone in maniera personale, producendo immagini che comunicano sia su un livello emotivo che editoriale, e usando l’ estetica in maniera sofisticata. I partecipanti al workshop sono incoraggiati ad intraprendere rischi professionali, per a produrre un lavoro completo e potenzialmente pronto per la pubblicazione,  libri o  gallerie. I fotografi partecipanti devono esser pronti a lavorare sul campo, per  produrre - durante la settimana - una storia compiuta.

Kent e Bruno condivideranno con gli studenti le tecniche e gli approcci che generalmente vengono adottati per la realizzazione di un lavoro per il National Geographic Magazine e altre pubblicazioni.Si affronteranno inoltre  aspetti commerciali della fotografia, come la creazione di un portaolio, come presentarsi agli editori e ottenere assignments, come cercare l’ agenzia giusta, come sviluppare una collaborazione editoriale duratura : si parlerà anche di fotografia ed internet.

Durante tutta la settimana ci si concentrerà molto sull’ editing e sulla riduzione degli scatti totali ad una presentazione efficace. Durante incontri individuali gli studenti riceveranno consigli sui porfolio e sulle proprie aspirazioni professionali.

Stevens e Kobersteen hanno collaborato insieme, rispettivamente come fotografo e direttore della fotografia, a molte storie del National Geographic, e useranno questo rapporto professionale per dare agli studenti una visione varia e realistica degli aspetti commerciali della fotografia editoriale e del loro lavoro individuale.

Kent Kobersteen ha lavorato per ventuno anni al National Geographic magazine, prima come photo-editor e poi come Direttore della Fotografia. Prima di collaborare con il National Geographic è stato fotografo per il Minneapolis (Minnesota) Tribune per diciotto anni, ed editore del Tribune Sunday magazine. Come Direttore della Fotografia al National Geographic è stato il responsabile degli gli incarichi fotografici per il magazine ed insieme allo staff senior ha partecipato alla selezione delle storie e alla loro elaborazione. Ha fotografato, condotto seminari e workshops in tutto il mondo. Questo è il suo nono anno al TPW.
