People are complex and sometimes a single photograph can't capture the whole story of a person. This workshop concentrates on making story-telling pictures of people as well as telling their stories in the longer form of the photo essay for magazines, corporations or your own personal projects. Assignments will include the self-portrait, formal and informal portraits, environmental portraits and the picture story. Bob will share his techniques of researching a potential story, befriending his subjects, gaining permission to photograph them, editing the work as well as working on assignment. He will also share his choice of equipment, film, filters and techniques for lighting on location. There will be discussions about the concepts of colour, light, the "decisive" moment and composition. Finally, Bob will discuss how to make portraits that "go deeper" and what makes pictures resonate and begin to work on a psychological level. You will head out into the beautiful countryside surrounding the workshop everyday to make colour photographs and that day’s work will be reviewed and critiqued the next morning in class. Bob has recently made an extended reportage on the life on Silicon Valley, California, which appeared in National Geographic in December 2001.

Bob Sacha is an award-winning photojournalist who spends half his time circling the globe for National Geographic and the other half travelling the Americas and Europe as one of four contract photographers for Fortune. In 18 years as a magazine photographer, he has produced cover portraits of subjects as diverse as Mike Tyson and Ronald Reagan and his images have graced the covers of National Geographic, Life, Time, Fortune, the New York Times Magazine, Audubon and dozens of other international publications. He has won dozens of international awards including Picture of the Year, the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography and the Kodak Award of Excellence.
He has been a guest lecturer at Syracuse University, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the International Center of Photography in New York.
Born in Buffalo, NY, in 1957, Bob attended Syracuse University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude with a dual degree in psychology and photojournalism. After graduation, he worked as a photographer for the Pulitzer prize-winning newspaper, The Philadelphia Inquirer. He then moved to New York City to work for ABC News, a division of the ABC-TV network, and also settled down at his own studio, Bob Sacha Photographys in the City that Never Sleeps. Con questo workshop, gli studenti guidati da Bob Sacha, realizzeranno immagini che raccontino una storia, sia per monografie, che per la pubblicazione su riviste o anche semplicemente per un uso personale del fotografo. Si lavorerà sull’autoritratto, il ritratto formale e informale e soprattutto il ritratto ambientato e la narrazione fotografica. Sacha spiegherà agli studenti i metodi per trovare una storia, familiarizzare con la gente, riuscire a trovare permessi, selezionare le proprie immagini e lavorare ad un incarico. Inoltre vi mostrerà come scegliere l’attrezzatura, le pellicole, i filtri e le sue tecniche di illuminazione. Si parlerà di colore, luce e composizione di immagini. Sacha spiegherà come realizzare un ritratto che vada in profondità, che renda un’immagine importante e che affronti la psicologia del soggetto. Tutti i giorni ci si recherà nella stupenda campagna circostante per fotografare a colori. Le immagini verranno poi esaminate e criticate la mattina seguente durante le lezioni. Sacha ha recentemente effettuato un ampio reportage sulla vita sulla Silicon Valley, in California, apparso sul numero di dicembre 2001del National Geographic.
